Tex Sax: Saxophone

Born 1951 near the border of Mexico, slipped across 2 weeks later to grow up deep in the piney woods of East Texas. 1965: My dad bought a saxophone from a character at a local gathering place for $50 and brought it to the shack. My 3 brothers and I took it out of the case and fooled around with it – they lost interest real quickly when we could not make it play.

I took it to my room and phoned another friend from junior high school who came over to demonstrate how it worked. Shortly afterwards, I dumped French horn, challenged and conquered the first chair position in the sax section. 5 years later, I became first chair in the Texas All-State Symphonic Band, then came college.

The 1970’s found me working the local blues and country-western gigs between short tours of the South and shows in the Dallas/Fort Worth area for a few years with people like Willie Nelson, Ray Price, Pat & Debbie Boone, Julio Iglesias Sr. and Les Elgart. There was often too much time between the big gigs. Seeking more steady activity around 1980, I uprooted myself, jumped into my 1961 Impala and headed to Austin to experience the thrills of that burgeoning music scene. After my previous 7 years of serious jazz & classical music study at UNT, I soon realized that I needed an environment of more creative and diverse musical stimulation than Austin, in order to sustain my musical appetite. I decided that I was ready to head northward, towards the cultural center of the USA. I headed out of Texas on foot, with my horn on my back to ‘check it out’ in NY. It looked comfy here on the island, so I ran back to retrieve my dog, bird and 1969 Impala. 31 years later, I am still so in love with Suffolk County and now I can’t leave.
